Inspecting an FSBO RV: What Buyers Should Know
Inspecting an RV is one of the most critical steps when buying FSBO. Since private sellers typically sell RVs "as-is," it’s your responsibility to identify potential issues before finalizing the purchase.
Exterior Inspection
Roof and Seals: Inspect the roof for cracks, leaks, and sagging. Pay particular attention to seals around vents, skylights, and edges.
Tires: Check the tires for uneven wear, cracks, or dry rot. Replacing tires can be expensive, so factor this into your budget if necessary.
Windows and Doors: Ensure all windows and doors open and close properly, and check for any signs of water leaks around the frames.
Interior Inspection
Signs of Water Damage: Look for stains, soft spots in the floor, or peeling wallpaper, which are indicators of water damage — a common issue in older RVs.
Appliance Testing: Turn on all appliances, including the refrigerator, microwave, and air conditioning. A malfunctioning appliance can be costly to repair.
Storage Areas: Open all cabinets, closets, and drawers to ensure they’re functional and free from mold or pests.
Mechanical and Utility Systems
Plumbing: Run water through all faucets and showers, and check the toilet for leaks or improper flushing.
Electrical System: Test all outlets, interior lights, and the generator (if applicable). Verify that the RV’s batteries are in good condition.
Engine (for Motorized RVs): Inspect the engine thoroughly. Check the oil, transmission fluid, and coolant levels. If possible, request a mechanic’s inspection.
Hiring a Professional Inspector
For extra peace of mind, consider hiring a professional RV inspector. They’ll provide a detailed report on the RV’s condition, helping you avoid costly surprises.
